Appearance and growth habit
African Violet Varieagted, also known as Saintpaulia, is a compact flowering houseplant with soft, slightly fuzzy leaves and charming blooms that can range from purple and pink to white, blue and bicoloured varieties with splooshes of yellow varieagtion. It grows as a neat rosette rather than climbing or trailing, making it ideal for windowsills, shelves and smaller spaces. With the right care, it can flower repeatedly throughout the year, because apparently one flowering season is simply not enough.
Care requirements
Give African Violet bright, indirect light and avoid harsh direct midday sun, which can scorch its leaves. Water when the surface of the growing mix begins to dry, preferably from below or directly onto the soil rather than onto the fuzzy leaves. Use a light, well-draining African Violet mix and keep temperatures around 18–27°C. Moderate humidity and regular feeding with a diluted balanced fertiliser during active growth will encourage healthy foliage and flowering. Remove spent flowers and older leaves regularly to keep the rosette tidy and encourage new blooms.
Troubleshooting
Yellowing or soft leaves usually indicate overwatering, poor drainage or cold conditions, while crispy leaves can result from dry soil or excessive direct sunlight. Avoid leaving water sitting on the leaves, as this can cause spotting and fungal problems. If your African Violet refuses to flower, check the light first; too little light is a common culprit. Watch for spider mites, thrips and mealybugs, particularly around the centre of the plant and underneath the leaves. Keep conditions stable and avoid constantly fussing over it; African Violets appreciate consistency.
Pet and reptile safety
African Violet is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a popular choice for pet-friendly homes. It is also generally regarded as a reptile-safe ornamental plant, although it should be treated as decorative rather than a deliberate food source. For reptile enclosures, only use plants that have been grown without pesticides, systemic insecticides or other chemicals that could be harmful if accidentally ingested.
