Appearance and growth habit
Alocasia Amazonica is a striking tropical foliage plant with dark green, arrow-shaped leaves, bold silvery-white veins and deep contrasting edges. Despite its name, it is a hybrid rather than a plant from the Amazon rainforest. It grows upright from a central base and stays relatively compact, making it a great choice for indoor plant collections, shelves and tropical displays.
Care requirements
Give Alocasia Amazonica bright, indirect light and keep it warm, ideally around 18–28°C. Water when the top few centimetres of the growing medium begin to dry, but avoid letting the roots sit in soggy soil. It enjoys moderate to high humidity and an airy, well-draining mix. Feed regularly during active growth for healthy foliage and new leaves.
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves are commonly caused by overwatering, poor drainage or sudden environmental changes. Brown or crispy edges can indicate low humidity, underwatering or too much direct sunlight. Drooping can occur when the plant is too dry or experiencing root stress. Keep conditions warm and consistent and avoid moving it around unnecessarily — Alocasias can be a little dramatic when their routine changes.
Pet and reptile safety
Alocasia Amazonica is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or eaten because it contains insoluble calcium oxalates, which can cause mouth irritation, drooling and difficulty swallowing. It is not recommended for reptiles that may nibble on the foliage. For reptile enclosures, choose a confirmed reptile-safe plant instead.
