Appearance and growth habit
Anoectochilus Roxburghii, commonly known as the Jewel Orchid, is grown primarily for its stunning foliage rather than its flowers. Its dark green leaves feature intricate golden or copper-coloured veining that almost looks painted on. It has a low, spreading growth habit and stays relatively compact, making it an excellent choice for humid terrariums, vivariums and plant cabinets.
Care requirements
Provide low to moderate, indirect light, as strong direct light can scorch its delicate leaves and fade the attractive veining. Keep the growing medium consistently lightly moist but never waterlogged, and provide high humidity with gentle airflow. Warm temperatures and stable conditions will keep this tropical Jewel Orchid looking its best.
Troubleshooting
Brown leaf edges, curling leaves or fading colour can indicate low humidity, excessive light or inconsistent watering. Yellowing leaves and soft stems are usually a warning that the plant is staying too wet. Avoid letting the growing medium dry out completely, but equally, don't turn it into a miniature swamp. Good drainage and gentle airflow are essential.
Pet and reptile safety
Anoectochilus Roxburghii is generally regarded as non-toxic to cats and dogs, although ingestion of any plant can potentially cause mild digestive upset. It is also commonly considered reptile-safe and is well suited to humid tropical terrarium and vivarium environments. For animal enclosures, always use plants that have been grown without pesticides, systemic insecticides or other chemical treatments.
