Appearance and growth habit

Begonia Listada is a compact, eye-catching Begonia with velvety olive-green leaves, striking pale green stripes along the centre and rich reddish-purple undersides. It has a bushy, slightly trailing growth habit and stays relatively compact, making it ideal for shelves, smaller spaces and tropical plant displays. The foliage does most of the showing off, as usual.

Care requirements

Give Begonia Listada bright, indirect light and keep the growing medium lightly and consistently moist, but never soggy. It enjoys moderate to high humidity and warm temperatures, ideally around 18–27°C. Use a light, well-draining mix and a pot with drainage holes. Feed lightly during active growth, and avoid getting the leaves constantly wet as this can encourage fungal problems. It also makes a lovely terrarium plant when given good airflow and plenty of indirect light.

Troubleshooting

Yellow leaves, soft stems or a constantly wet potting mix usually indicate overwatering or poor drainage. Crispy edges or leaf drop can result from dry conditions, low humidity or sudden temperature changes. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its delicate leaves, while insufficient light can lead to weak, stretched growth. Keep an eye out for spider mites, thrips and mealybugs, particularly when conditions are warm and dry. Begonia Listada can be a little dramatic when unhappy, but stable conditions usually bring it back around.

Pet and reptile safety

Begonia Listada is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested, as Begonias contain calcium oxalates that can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive system. It should also not be considered reptile-safe and is not recommended for enclosures where reptiles may nibble the foliage. If a leaf is damaged or accidentally consumed, monitor the animal closely and seek veterinary advice if any signs of irritation or illness occur. For reptile habitats, choose plants specifically confirmed as safe for the particular species.
