Colony of x5 Isopods
About the isopods
Dairy Cow Isopods (Porcellio laevis) are a larger, active species with distinctive white-and-black markings that give them their charming “Dairy Cow” name. They are excellent clean-up crew members for bioactive terrariums and are known for being active, hardy and quick to establish a colony. Sold as a starter group of 5, they are a great choice for getting your enclosure's clean-up crew started.
Care requirements
Dairy Cow Isopods thrive in warm, humid environments with plenty of organic material to eat and hide in. Provide a deep, moisture-retentive substrate with leaf litter and pieces of decaying wood. Keep one area of the enclosure consistently moist while allowing another area to remain slightly drier, giving the isopods a choice of conditions.
Feeding and habitat
Leaf litter and decaying wood should make up the foundation of their diet, with occasional additions of vegetables, specialised isopod food or other suitable protein sources. Dairy Cow Isopods have a higher protein appetite than many smaller isopod species, so occasional protein supplementation helps support healthy growth and breeding. Provide a calcium source such as cuttlebone to support healthy exoskeleton development.
Reptile and enclosure compatibility
Dairy Cow Isopods are widely used as clean-up crews in suitable bioactive reptile, amphibian and invertebrate enclosures. They help break down waste and decaying organic matter while recycling nutrients back into the substrate. They can also become a tasty occasional snack for some reptiles, so don't be surprised if your clean-up crew mysteriously starts disappearing. Always ensure the species is suitable for your particular animal and enclosure conditions.
