Appearance and growth habit

Ficus pumila Variegata, also known as Variegated Creeping Fig, is a fast-growing trailing and climbing plant with small, heart-shaped leaves edged and splashed with creamy white. Its delicate-looking foliage makes it a favourite for terrariums, hanging displays and training onto textured surfaces. It naturally wants to climb, so give it something to grab onto and it will happily get to work.

Care requirements

Give Ficus pumila Variegata bright, indirect light and keep the soil lightly moist, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. It enjoys warmth and moderate to high humidity, making it particularly well suited to tropical terrariums. Use a rich but well-draining soil mix and fertilise lightly during active growth. For larger plants, provide a rough surface such as cork bark, wood or another textured support for the aerial roots to attach to. Regular trimming will keep its enthusiastic growth under control.

Troubleshooting

Yellow leaves and soft growth are usually signs of overwatering or poor drainage, while crispy leaves and leaf drop can indicate dry conditions, low humidity or too much direct sunlight. If the plant becomes leggy or produces smaller leaves, increase the light. Ficus pumila Variegata can grow surprisingly quickly when happy, so regular pruning may be needed unless you fancy it slowly taking over the neighbourhood. Check regularly for spider mites, mealybugs and scale, particularly when growing conditions are warm and dry.

Pet and reptile safety

Ficus pumila is not considered pet-safe and contains a milky sap that can cause irritation if chewed or ingested. Keep it away from cats and dogs that like to sample the greenery. It is also not recommended as a reptile-safe plant, particularly for enclosures where leaves may be regularly nibbled. If used in a terrarium, treat it as a decorative plant rather than a food source and ensure it has been grown without pesticides or systemic treatments.
