Appearance and growth habit

Hoya ‘Mathilde’ is a compact, easy-going Hoya with attractive rounded green leaves, often showing subtle silver flecking. It develops trailing or cascading stems and can produce clusters of small, star-shaped flowers with a sweet fragrance when mature and happy. A great choice for shelves, hanging pots or letting it wander around a moss pole.

Care requirements

Give Hoya ‘Mathilde’ bright, indirect light, with some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun being beneficial. Allow the potting mix to dry out well between waterings, as Hoyas prefer being slightly too dry rather than constantly wet. Use a chunky, well-draining mix and provide warm temperatures with moderate humidity. Avoid moving the plant unnecessarily once it starts developing flower buds.

Troubleshooting

Yellowing or soft leaves are often a sign of overwatering, while wrinkled leaves can indicate that the plant is staying too dry for too long. Long, sparse growth usually means it needs more light. Avoid cutting off bare-looking flower spurs, as Hoyas can produce flowers from the same spurs again. Patience is very much part of the Hoya package.

Pet and reptile safety

Hoya ‘Mathilde’ is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs and is regarded as a suitable decorative plant for many reptile and amphibian enclosures. However, it should be treated as a decorative plant rather than a food source, and animals should not be encouraged to consume the foliage. For reptile enclosures, only use plants that are pesticide- and chemical-free.
