Appearance and growth habit
Maranta leuconeura Variegata, often called the variegated prayer plant, is a striking foliage plant with patterned leaves in green, cream, and soft yellow tones. Its leaves naturally fold upward at night, as if it’s politely clocking out after a long day. It grows in a low, spreading clump, making it perfect for tabletops, shelves, or plant groupings where its movement and colour can be appreciated up close. It’s decorative, expressive, and just a little bit dramatic (in a charming way).
 
Care requirements
This Maranta prefers bright indirect light but can tolerate medium light conditions indoors. Keep the soil consistently lightly moist, avoiding both soggy roots and full dry-outs. It thrives in higher humidity and stable indoor temperatures, making it well-suited to bathrooms or kitchens with good light. Use a well-draining potting mix and avoid harsh direct sun, which can fade or scorch its delicate leaves.
 
Troubleshooting
Brown leaf edges are usually caused by low humidity, dry air, or inconsistent watering. If the variegation becomes dull or faded, the plant may need more filtered light. Curling or drooping leaves often indicate underwatering or temperature stress. Like many Marantas, it will let you know quickly when it’s unhappy — not subtle, but at least honest about it.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Maranta leuconeura Variegata is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and most common household pets. It is also generally regarded as safe around reptiles such as geckos, bearded dragons, and tortoises if lightly nibbled. While it won’t cause poisoning, excessive chewing may still result in mild digestive upset, so it’s best kept as décor rather than a snack option.
