Appearance and growth habit
Monstera esqueleto is a highly sought-after climbing Monstera known for its large, elongated leaves with dramatic fenestrations. As it matures, the leaves develop more impressive splits and holes, giving it that unmistakable jungle look. It is a vigorous climber and will happily use a moss pole or other support as it grows.
 
Care requirements
Give Monstera esqueleto bright, indirect light and keep it warm with moderate to high humidity. Water when the top portion of the growing medium has started to dry, rather than keeping it constantly wet. Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix and provide a moss pole or trellis if you want larger, more mature foliage. Good light and something to climb are the shortcuts to a much happier Monstera.
 
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves are commonly caused by overwatering, while brown, crispy edges can indicate dry conditions, low humidity or too much direct sunlight. Small, less-fenestrated leaves are normal on younger plants but can also indicate insufficient light or lack of climbing support. Check the roots if the plant stays wet for too long, as Monsteras do not appreciate permanently soggy feet.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Monstera esqueleto is not considered pet-safe. Like other Monsteras, it contains insoluble calcium oxalates that can cause irritation if chewed or eaten. It is therefore not recommended for cats, dogs, or reptile and amphibian enclosures where animals may consume the foliage. For reptile habitats, choose plants specifically regarded as safe for the species being kept.
