Appearance and growth habit
Pellaea rotundifolia, commonly known as the Button Fern, is a charming evergreen fern with slender, arching stems covered in small, round, leathery leaflets. Its neat, compact growth habit makes it perfect for shelves, desks, hanging planters, and terrariums where a softer, textured look is desired. It may not be flashy, but this fern quietly earns its place in any indoor jungle.
Care requirements
Button Fern thrives in bright, indirect light but will tolerate medium light conditions. Keep the soil lightly moist, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings, and ensure the pot has good drainage. It enjoys average to higher humidity and warm indoor temperatures but is more forgiving of drier air than many other ferns. Feed with a diluted balanced fertiliser during spring and summer to support healthy new growth.
Troubleshooting
Crispy or browning leaves usually indicate the plant has become too dry or is sitting in very low humidity. Yellowing foliage is often a sign of overwatering or poor drainage. Avoid placing the plant in harsh, direct sunlight, as this can scorch the delicate foliage. With consistent watering and a stable environment, Button Fern is a wonderfully low-fuss companion.
Pet and reptile safety
Pellaea rotundifolia is considered pet and reptile safe. It is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and is widely regarded as suitable for reptile enclosures and bioactive terrariums. While safe if occasionally nibbled, it is best grown as a decorative plant to provide natural cover, texture, and a lush tropical feel rather than as a food source.
