Appearance and growth habit
Platycerium bifurcatum, commonly known as the Staghorn Fern, makes a striking statement in kokedama form. Its distinctive antler-shaped fronds arch gracefully from the moss ball, creating a sculptural, living display. As it matures, it develops both upright shield fronds and cascading fertile fronds, giving it plenty of character and visual interest.
 
Care requirements
This epiphytic fern thrives in bright, indirect light and enjoys moderate humidity. Soak the kokedama when it feels noticeably lighter, then allow excess water to drain completely. Staghorn Ferns prefer good airflow and appreciate occasional misting, especially in drier indoor environments. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the fronds.
 
Troubleshooting
Brown patches on the shield fronds are often a normal part of growth and not a cause for concern. Crispy frond tips may indicate underwatering or low humidity, while yellowing foliage can suggest overwatering. If growth becomes slow or sparse, move the plant to a brighter position with filtered light.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Platycerium bifurcatum is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and other household pets. It is also generally regarded as safe for reptile enclosures and bioactive habitats. While not harmful if occasionally nibbled, it should not be relied upon as a food source, and excessive consumption may still cause mild digestive upset.
