Appearance and growth habit

Solanum jasminoides variegata, commonly known as Variegated Potato Vine, is a fast-growing climbing plant with attractive green leaves edged and splashed with creamy white variegation. Clusters of delicate star-shaped white flowers with yellow centres appear throughout the growing season, creating a light, elegant display against the colourful foliage. It can be trained onto trellises, arches, or supports, making it an excellent choice for vertical interest indoors in bright spaces or in sheltered outdoor areas. It grows enthusiastically, so don't be surprised if it starts eyeing nearby structures as its next climbing project.

Care requirements

This plant performs best in bright indirect light to full sun, which helps maintain strong variegation and encourages flowering. Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry out, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. A fertile, well-draining potting mix and occasional feeding during the growing season will support healthy growth. Regular pruning helps maintain shape and encourages a fuller, bushier appearance.

Troubleshooting

If the variegation starts fading or flowering decreases, the plant may need more light. Yellowing leaves are often linked to overwatering or poor drainage, while dry, crispy edges can result from underwatering. Sparse or leggy growth usually indicates insufficient light or a need for pruning. Fortunately, this is a vigorous grower and typically recovers quickly once conditions improve.

Pet and reptile safety

Solanum jasminoides variegata is toxic to cats, dogs, and reptiles if ingested. Like many members of the Solanum family, it contains compounds that can cause gastrointestinal upset, drooling, vomiting, and digestive discomfort. It is not considered safe for tortoises, bearded dragons, geckos, or other pets that may chew leaves, stems, or berries. Best grown out of reach so it can focus on producing flowers rather than problems.
