Appearance and growth habit
Tillandsia juncea is a slender, grass-like air plant with long, narrow green leaves that grow in an upright, slightly wild-looking clump. Its simple shape makes it particularly useful for adding height and texture to plant displays, mounted arrangements and suitable terrariums. It is understated compared with some Tillandsias, but it still manages to look effortlessly cool.
 
Care requirements
Give Tillandsia juncea bright, indirect light and plenty of good airflow. Water it thoroughly by soaking or wetting the entire plant, then allow it to dry completely before placing it back in its display. Avoid leaving water sitting in the centre of the plant, as prolonged moisture can cause rot. It is fairly forgiving as long as it gets enough light, airflow and occasional thorough watering.
 
Troubleshooting
Brown or crispy leaf tips usually indicate that the plant is getting too dry or receiving too much harsh sunlight. Soft, darkening or mushy leaves are a warning that it is staying wet for too long, so improve airflow and allow it to dry properly. If growth is weak or the plant looks pale, move it somewhere brighter. The golden rule with this air plant is simple: water well, then let it dry.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Tillandsia juncea is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs and is regarded as a pet-safe plant. It is also suitable for reptile and amphibian enclosures, provided it is securely positioned and the plant is kept free from pesticides, fertilisers or other chemicals that could be harmful to your animals.
