She may be compact, but Alocasia Melo is not here to blend in. With ultra-thick, textured, almost rubbery leaves that look like they’ve been sculpted out of jade, she gives prehistoric jungle queen. Matte, dark green-blue tones? Check. Deeply ridged surface? Oh yes. She’s mysterious, moody, and magnetic—a collector’s dream and a terrarium centerpiece if humidity’s high and space is tight.
But don’t be fooled by her tough look. She might look like a tank, but she’s got diva energy.
If her light is too low, her soil too wet, or her roots too cold? … then your in trouble.
Care Guide: Treat Her Right
Light: Bright, indirect light. She can’t stand the harsh rays, but don’t shove her in a dark corner either. She needs to be admired—and to photosynthesize.
Water: Keep it consistent but never soggy. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. She's not a fan of wet feet.
Humidity: Melo wants spa day, every day. 60% or higher humidity keeps her happy. Mist if you must, or better yet, give her a humidifier.
Soil: Chunky, fast-draining mix. Think orchid bark, perlite, coco peat. She likes her space—tight roots are a no-go.
Pot: Terracotta or breathable pots work best to avoid root rot. But keep her snug, not squashed.
Winter Guide: Keep Her Warm or Else
Temperature: Never let her dip below 15°C. She's tropical and not into cold feet.
Watering in Winter: Scale back. Let her top layer dry out more between drinks.
Light Boost: Winter sun got her sulking? Give her a grow light boost to keep her photosynthetic sass up.
Troubleshooting Her Tantrums
Yellowing Leaves? Probably overwatering or poor drainage. Dry her out and check those roots.
Curling Leaves? Too dry or too cold. She’s delicate despite the armour.
Brown Crispy Edges? Low humidity. She's not here for desert air.
Droopy or Sudden Leaf Loss? You’ve crossed her line. Check for cold drafts, soggy roots, or stress. She will throw a fit if things aren't just right.
She’s moody, she’s dramatic, she’s high-maintenance—and you’ll love her for it.
