Blechnum Brasiliense Fern

Overview

Blechnum brasiliense, also known as the Brazilian Tree Fern, is a tropical fern prized for its tall, upright growth and lush, glossy fronds. It adds dramatic height and texture to indoor spaces, shaded patios, and tropical-style terrariums. Its upright, architectural form makes it a standout plant in any collection.

Appearance

  • Fronds are long, arching, and deeply divided.

  • The young fronds emerge with a lighter green tint, maturing to rich, dark green.

  • It grows upright, forming a small trunk-like base from which the fronds radiate.

  • Indoor plants can reach 60–120 cm tall, while outdoor specimens may grow taller in ideal conditions.

The overall look is bold, structured, and tropical.

Reptile Safety

Blechnum brasiliense is non-toxic and safe to keep around reptiles. It can be used in enclosures for species that may brush past the fronds. It is not suitable for reptiles that intentionally eat leaves, as repeated grazing could stress the plant. Otherwise, accidental contact is safe for all reptile types.

Indoor Use

  • Thrives in bright, indirect light.

  • Can tolerate medium light but grows more slowly.

  • Works well in decorative pots, plant stands, or grouped with other tropical foliage.

  • Prefers humid rooms such as bathrooms or greenhouses.

Outdoor Use

  • Prefers shade or filtered light outdoors.

  • Ideal for patios, gardens, or under trees in warm, humid climates.

  • Protect from direct midday sun and frost.

  • Can grow year-round outdoors in frost-free zones.

Terrarium Use (Plant-Only Terrariums)

  • Works well in large, open plant-only terrariums.

  • Enjoys high humidity and good airflow.

  • Adds height, structure, and a tropical feel to terrarium setups.

  • Avoid small, sealed terrariums where stagnant air may cause rot.

Light Requirements

  • Bright, indirect light is ideal.

  • Avoid direct sun, which can scorch fronds.

  • Low light slows growth and reduces frond colour intensity.

Watering

  • Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

  • Water when the top layer of soil begins to feel dry.

  • Avoid letting water sit in the crown of the plant to prevent rot.

Humidity

  • High humidity (50–80%) is ideal.

  • Helps maintain lush, vibrant fronds.

  • Perfect for reptile rooms, terrariums, or humid indoor spaces.

Temperature

  • Ideal range: 18–28°C.

  • Protect from cold drafts, frost, or sudden temperature drops.

When to Repot

  • Repot when the roots become crowded or the plant outgrows its container.

  • Best done in spring.

  • Choose a pot slightly larger than the current one with good drainage.

Soil to Use

  • Light, airy, moisture-retentive mix:

    • potting soil

    • cocopeat or peat

    • perlite

    • optional fine bark

  • Ensures proper drainage while holding sufficient moisture for healthy growth.

Troubleshooting

Brown tips

  • Cause: low humidity or underwatering

  • Fix: increase humidity and water consistently

Yellow fronds

  • Cause: overwatering or poor drainage

  • Fix: allow soil to dry slightly, ensure good drainage

Slow growth

  • Cause: low light or cold temperatures

  • Fix: move to brighter, warmer location

Rotting crown or base

  • Cause: standing water

  • Fix: reduce watering, improve drainage, trim affected areas

Faded fronds

  • Cause: insufficient light

  • Fix: relocate to brighter, indirect light
