Hey, check this out!
I just found the coolest fern for terrariums — Microsorum Crocodyllus, aka the Crocodile Fern. Its leaves are ridiculously textured, like tiny green crocodile scales — you can’t help but touch them!
The Crocodile Fern is a standout fern for terrariums, known for its striking, textured leaves that resemble miniature green crocodile scales. It’s slow-growing, compact, and perfect for creating a lush, tropical vibe.
Light: Thrives in low to medium indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, so it’s perfect for shaded corners of your terrarium or home.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged. Overwatering can cause root rot, while drying out can make the fronds droop. Mist lightly to maintain humidity, especially in dry indoor air.
Humidity:High humidity is ideal. This fern loves terrariums because it thrives in the consistent moisture and warmth of enclosed spaces. Open terrariums need occasional misting.
Temperature: Prefers warm, stable temperatures around 18–28°C. Avoid placing it in drafty areas or near heaters/air conditioners.
Fertiliser: Feed once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Skip fertilising in winter when growth naturally slows.
Soil & Potting: Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive mix, like a combination of peat, orchid bark, and perlite. In terrariums, ensure the substrate doesn’t get soggy.
Pet & Reptile Safety:Non-toxic for cats, dogs, and most reptiles — safe to include in terrariums with geckos, frogs, or other small pets.
Terrarium Tips:
Great as a ground cover or mid-layer plant.
Pair with mosses, ferns, and other tropical plants for a realistic jungle look.
Avoid overcrowding — it spreads slowly and needs room for its fronds to unfurl.
