Overview
Murdannia loriformis ‘Bright Star’ is a compact, low-growing tropical plant known for its clean, structured look and subtle silver-green foliage. It is easy to grow, thrives in indoor environments, and works well in decorative pots, terrariums, and reptile-safe setups. It is fast becoming popular due to its simple care needs and neat, modern appearance.
Appearance
‘Bright Star’ forms upright, narrow leaves that grow in a fountain-like shape. Leaves are smooth, glossy, and coloured in soft tones of green with a slight silvery wash. New growth appears from the centre, keeping the plant tidy and symmetrical. A 15 cm plant typically fills its pot well and continues to branch softly as it matures.
The overall look is minimal, clean, and elegant.
Reptile Safety
Murdannia loriformis is non-toxic and safe around reptiles, including species that may touch or brush against plants. It does not contain compounds known to harm reptiles if accidental nibbling occurs. It is suitable for enclosures where the reptile does not intentionally graze on plants as part of its diet.
Indoor Use
Very well-suited for indoor growing. It handles medium to bright, indirect light and adapts easily to typical household conditions. Its compact size makes it excellent for desks, shelves, and small decorative groupings. It works beautifully in bathrooms or kitchens where humidity is naturally higher.
Outdoor Use
Outdoors, it prefers shade or soft filtered light. It cannot tolerate harsh direct sun and should be protected from extreme heat. It grows best in warm climates and should be moved indoors if temperatures drop below 12°C.Perfect for patios, shaded verandas, or covered outdoor racks.
Terrarium Use (Plant-Only Terrariums)
‘Bright Star’ works extremely well in open terrariums or bio-style plant arrangements. It enjoys humidity but still needs airflow, making open-top or ventilated setups ideal. Its structured shape adds height and gentle contrast in tropical-style layouts. Avoid sealed, high-moisture terrariums with stagnant air, as this may encourage rot.
Light Requirements
Medium to bright, indirect light is ideal. It tolerates slightly lower light but grows slower and may stretch. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Water when the top of the soil feels slightly dry. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. The plant is sensitive to standing water and prefers a consistent but moderate watering routine. Good drainage is essential.
Humidity
Enjoys medium to high humidity. Works well in reptile rooms, indoor greenhouses, or naturally humid homes. Dry air may cause the leaf tips to brown slightly.
Temperature
Ideal range: 18 to 28°C.Protect from cold drafts, heaters, and sudden temperature drops.
When to Repot
Repot when the plant:
becomes root-bound
fills the pot completely
begins to produce new shoots that crowd the surface
Best time to repot is spring or early summer. Choose a pot only one size bigger to prevent excess moisture retention.
Soil to Use
Use a loose, airy, fast-draining mix such as:
potting soil
cocopeat
perlite
a small amount of fine bark or compost
The goal is moisture that drains well while allowing roots to breathe.
Troubleshooting
Pale or stretched growth
Cause: low light
Fix: move to brighter, indirect light
Brown leaf tips
Cause: dry air or inconsistent watering
Fix: increase humidity and keep watering steady
Yellowing leaves
Cause: overwatering or poor drainage
Fix: allow soil to dry slightly and improve drainage
Soft, mushy stems
Cause: rot from staying too wet
Fix: reduce watering, trim damaged sections, repot if necessary
Slow growth
Cause: cold temperatures or low light
Fix: move to a warmer, brighter location
