Pratia pedunculata, also known as Creeping Blue Star or Blue Star Creeper, is a delightful ground-hugging plant that’s often admired for its carpet of tiny star-shaped flowers. With its soft foliage and delicate blooms, it brings a charming touch of greenery to terrariums, vivariums, and small garden displays.
Appearance
This low-growing perennial forms a dense mat of fine green leaves, dotted with dainty, pale blue to lilac star-shaped flowers. It spreads quickly along the soil surface, creating a soft, moss-like effect when in full growth.
Suitability for Terrariums
Pratia pedunculata is an excellent choice for terrariums, particularly larger ones where you want a natural, ground-covering effect. It thrives in humid environments and appreciates consistently moist soil, making it perfect for closed or semi-closed terrariums. In smaller open terrariums, regular misting helps maintain the humidity it loves.
Pet & Reptile Safety
Pratia pedunculata is considered non-toxic to pets and safe for reptiles. This makes it a wonderful addition to enclosures where animals may roam, as you don’t need to worry about accidental nibbles or skin contact.
Care Tips
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but will tolerate partial shade.
Water: Keep the soil consistently moist. Avoid letting it dry out completely, as this can cause stress.
Humidity: Enjoys higher humidity, making it thrive in terrariums and vivariums.
Growth: Spreads fast—trim or pinch back regularly if you want to keep it compact in a confined space.
