Appearance and growth habit
Begonia Rex ‘Hugh McLaughlin’ is a striking foliage Begonia with large, textured leaves displaying rich shades of green, silver and burgundy, often with a dramatic swirling pattern. It grows into a compact, bushy plant and makes an excellent addition to an indoor Begonia collection. Its bold foliage brings plenty of personality without needing a huge amount of space.
Care requirements
Give Begonia Rex ‘Hugh McLaughlin’ bright, indirect light and keep it warm, ideally around 18–28°C. It enjoys moderate to high humidity and should be watered when the top layer of the growing medium starts to dry. Use an airy, well-draining mix and avoid keeping the roots constantly wet. Feed lightly during active growth to encourage healthy, colourful leaves.
Troubleshooting
Brown or crispy leaf edges can indicate low humidity, underwatering or too much direct sunlight. Yellowing leaves are usually linked to overwatering or poor drainage, while sudden leaf drop can occur after changes in temperature, humidity or watering. Provide good airflow and consistent moisture, and avoid keeping the foliage wet for long periods.
Pet and reptile safety
Begonia Rex ‘Hugh McLaughlin’ should be treated as not pet safe. Begonias contain calcium oxalates, which can cause irritation if eaten. It is not recommended for reptiles that may nibble on the foliage, so choose a confirmed reptile-safe plant for enclosures where animals have direct access to plants.
