Appearance and growth habit
The Begonia Rex 'Evening Glow' is grown for its spectacular foliage rather than its flowers. Its large, textured leaves display dramatic shades of deep burgundy, charcoal, silver, and rich pink, creating a glowing effect that easily steals the spotlight. Compact and bushy, it's the perfect statement plant for shelves, desks, and indoor plant collections where boring simply isn't invited.
Care requirements
'Evening Glow' thrives in bright, indirect light where its colours stay bold and vibrant. Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. It enjoys higher humidity and warm temperatures between 18–26°C, making it an excellent choice for terrariums, indoor displays, or humid rooms. Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy new growth.
Troubleshooting
Crispy leaf edges usually mean the air is too dry or the plant has been allowed to dry out too much. Yellowing leaves are often a sign of overwatering, so resist the urge to love it with the watering can every day. If the colours start looking dull, move it to a brighter spot with indirect light. Like most Rex Begonias, it appreciates consistency more than surprises.
Pet and reptile safety
Begonia Rex 'Evening Glow' is toxic to cats and dogs if eaten, as it contains insoluble calcium oxalates that can cause irritation and digestive upset. It is not considered safe for reptiles, including crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, bearded dragons, leopard geckos, tortoises, and other species that may nibble on foliage. It is best kept in displays where curious pets and reptiles cannot access it.
