Included will be a 5L tub of 2–4mm LECA

Appearance and growth habit

LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) 9–16mm is made up of chunky baked clay balls designed to improve drainage, airflow, and root health. These round terracotta-coloured pebbles are lightweight, reusable, and surprisingly satisfying to pour into pots. Ideal for semi-hydro growing, propagation, terrariums, drainage layers, or mixing into chunky soil blends. Think of it as giving your plant roots a little more breathing room and a lot less soggy drama.

Care requirements

LECA is low maintenance and easy to use, whether you are growing in semi-hydro or simply improving drainage in standard potting mixes. Rinse thoroughly before first use to remove dust, then soak before planting if using for semi-hydro setups. It works best paired with a nutrient solution since the clay balls themselves contain no nutrients. Reusable and long lasting, LECA can be cleaned and sterilised between uses, making it a favourite for plant lovers who enjoy less mess and more root growth.

Troubleshooting

White mineral build-up on the balls is completely normal and usually comes from fertiliser salts or hard water. A quick rinse or soak sorts it out. If roots are drying out too fast, your water level may be too low or humidity too low for the plant type. If algae appears, reduce direct sunlight on wet LECA and refresh the water more regularly. Basically, if your LECA starts looking swampy, it is time for a little spa day.

Pet and reptile safety

LECA is non-toxic to pets and reptiles, making it a popular choice for bioactive enclosures, terrariums, and reptile drainage layers. However, the clay balls should not be eaten, as they can pose a choking or digestive blockage risk for curious pets. Always rinse before use in reptile setups to remove dust and keep enclosures clean and safe.
