Appearance and growth habit
Caryota mitis, commonly known as the Fishtail Palm, gets its name from its unique leaf shape that resembles a fish tail — once you see it, you can’t unsee it. This multi-stemmed palm grows in dense clusters, creating a lush, tropical screen over time. Its foliage is bold and architectural, making it a strong statement plant for indoor jungle setups or shaded outdoor spaces in warm climates. It grows upright but full, so it brings volume without looking messy.
 
Care requirements
Fishtail Palm prefers bright indirect light but can tolerate light shade, especially in hotter environments. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and use a well-draining potting mix to prevent root issues. It enjoys warmth and humidity, so it performs best in stable indoor conditions or sheltered outdoor areas. Feed lightly during the growing season to support healthy growth, but don’t overdo it — it’s not in a rush.
 
Troubleshooting
Brown leaf tips are commonly caused by low humidity, underwatering, or salt build-up in the soil. Yellowing fronds may indicate overwatering or poor drainage. If growth slows, the plant may need more light or a feeding boost during the warmer months. Older fronds naturally die off as new ones emerge, so occasional trimming is part of the process — not a plant emergency.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Caryota mitis is toxic to cats, dogs, and reptiles if ingested. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and digestive discomfort. It is not considered safe for tortoises, bearded dragons, geckos, or other curious pets that may chew foliage. Best kept out of reach so your pets stay safe and your palm stays intact.
