The Ctenanthe setosa, often called the Never Never Plant, is all about movement and pattern.

Long, oval leaves stretch outward in soft arches, painted in silvery green with darker green striping. Flip a leaf over and you’ll find the real surprise — rich purple undersides that glow when the plant shifts or catches the light.

It has a lush, layered look without feeling heavy. Slightly wild. Slightly tropical. Very eye catching.

As a kokedama, the flowing foliage contrasts beautifully with the structured moss ball. The leaves spill and fan out, giving a softer, more organic feel compared to upright plants.

Pet & Reptile Safety

Good news: Ctenanthe setosa is considered non toxic to dogs, cats, and reptiles.

That makes it a safer option for homes with curious pets or bioactive reptile setups.
As always, nibbling isn’t encouraged, but it’s not classified as poisonous.

Plant Care

Light: Bright, indirect light is best. It can tolerate medium light but avoid direct sun, which can fade or scorch the leaves.

Water: This plant prefers consistent moisture. Do not let it dry out completely. The moss ball should stay lightly moist but never waterlogged.

Humidity: Loves humidity. The higher, the better. If your space is dry, occasional misting helps keep the leaf edges from crisping.

Temperature: Prefers warmth and stability. Keep away from cold drafts.

Movement: Like many in the prayer plant family, its leaves subtly move throughout the day and night in response to light.

Kokedama Care

Watering: Submerge the moss ball in room temperature water for 10–15 minutes when it feels lighter or slightly dry on the outside. Allow it to drain thoroughly before placing it back.

Because this plant prefers consistent moisture, you may water slightly more frequently than a Ficus kokedama.

Drainage: Always allow proper draining after soaking. Never let the kokedama sit in standing water.

Moss Maintenance: Light misting keeps the outer moss fresh and helps support humidity.

Feeding: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser during spring and summer once a month.

Rotation: Rotate occasionally to maintain balanced growth.
