Look & Feel

The Begonia maculata is pure drama in plant form. Deep olive-green leaves are splashed with crisp silver spots, while the undersides glow a rich burgundy red. Suspended in a moss ball, it feels almost sculptural. Light, airy, and a little bit wild. The contrast between the soft green moss and those striking, spotted leaves gives this kokedama a bold but refined presence.

Caring for Your Spotted Begonia

This begonia prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch those beautiful leaves, while too little light will dull the contrast and slow growth.

Water when the moss ball starts to feel lighter, but don’t let it stay soggy. Begonia maculata enjoys consistent moisture, not wet feet. It also appreciates humidity, so it thrives in kitchens, bathrooms, or grouped with other plants.

Avoid wetting the leaves too often, as begonias can be prone to spotting or fungal issues if water sits on them. Good airflow is your friend.

How to Care for Your Kokedama

Your kokedama is watered by soaking. When the moss ball feels light, submerge it in room-temperature water for about 10 to 15 minutes. Let it drain well before placing it back.

Keep it in bright, indirect light, and rotate it occasionally so it grows evenly. If the moss starts to look dry on the outside but still feels heavy, hold off on watering. Overwatering is the quickest way to upset a kokedama.

A light feed once a month during the growing season will keep things happy and growing.

Troubleshooting

Yellowing leaves usually mean overwatering or poor drainage. Let the moss dry out a bit more between soaks.

Crispy edges or drooping can mean it’s too dry or needs more humidity.

Leggy growth or faded spots? It’s asking for more light.

Leaf spots or mushy patches can be from water sitting on the leaves or poor airflow. Keep the leaves dry and the space well ventilated.

Pet, Reptile Safety & Air Quality

The Begonia maculata is not pet safe. It can be toxic if chewed or ingested, so best kept out of reach of curious pets and reptiles.

It is not considered a true air-purifying plant in any meaningful way, but it absolutely upgrades your space visually (which we all know counts for a lot).
