Appearance and growth habit

Philodendron Black Cardinal is a striking, compact-to-medium-sized self-heading Philodendron with broad, glossy leaves that emerge burgundy to deep red and mature into rich, almost black-green foliage. It grows upright rather than trailing, making it a great choice for adding a dramatic touch without needing a moss pole.

Care requirements

Give it bright, indirect light to encourage strong growth and rich leaf colour. Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry before watering, then let excess water drain away. Use a well-draining, airy potting mix and keep it warm with moderate to high humidity. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch those gorgeous dark leaves.

Troubleshooting

Yellowing or soft leaves are usually a sign of overwatering, while crispy brown edges can indicate inconsistent watering, dry air or too much direct sun. Slow or small new leaves can mean the plant needs more light, warmth or humidity. Wipe the leaves occasionally to keep them clean and make it easier to spot pests such as mealybugs and scale.

Pet and reptile safety

Philodendron Black Cardinal is toxic if ingested and should be kept away from cats, dogs and other pets that may chew on the foliage. It is not recommended as a reptile-safe plant, particularly for enclosures where the plant may be eaten. Best kept as a decorative houseplant rather than an all-you-can-eat buffet.
