Appearance and growth habit

Peperomia obtusifolia ‘Marble Variegated’ is a compact, easy-care houseplant with thick, glossy, spoon-shaped leaves patterned in shades of green, cream and pale yellow. It has a neat, bushy growth habit rather than trailing everywhere, making it a great choice for shelves, desks and smaller spaces. Small plant, plenty of personality.

Care requirements

Give it bright, indirect light to maintain its attractive variegation, although it can tolerate slightly lower light. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, as those chunky leaves store moisture and the plant really does not appreciate wet feet. Use a well-draining potting mix and keep it warm with moderate humidity. It is generally a forgiving plant, provided you resist the urge to overwater it.

Troubleshooting

Yellow, soft or dropping leaves usually point to overwatering or poor drainage. Pale or greener new growth can mean the plant needs more light, while crispy leaves may indicate it has been left too dry for too long or is receiving too much direct sun. Keep an eye out for common houseplant pests such as mealybugs and scale, particularly around the leaf joints.

Pet and reptile safety

Peperomia obtusifolia is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a good choice for pet-friendly homes. It is also generally regarded as a reptile-safe plant and can be suitable for appropriate terrariums and reptile enclosures, provided the specific enclosure conditions suit the plant. As always, plants should be free from pesticides and chemical treatments before being introduced to an animal enclosure.
