Appearance and growth habit
Davallia fejeensis, commonly known as the Rabbit’s Foot Fern, is a charming fern famous for its soft, furry rhizomes that creep over the surface of the pot, resembling little rabbit feet. Beneath these unusual rhizomes, delicate, finely divided green fronds create a lush, airy display. It grows in a spreading, slightly cascading habit, making it a fantastic choice for hanging baskets, decorative pots, or elevated shelves. It’s one of those plants that tends to spark conversations before people even notice the fronds.
 
Care requirements
This fern prefers bright, indirect light and consistently moist, well-draining soil. Water when the top layer of soil begins to feel slightly dry, taking care not to let the plant dry out completely. It enjoys moderate to high humidity and thrives in warm indoor conditions. The furry rhizomes should remain exposed above the soil surface rather than being buried, as they help the plant absorb moisture and grow naturally.
 
Troubleshooting
Brown or crispy frond tips are usually a sign of low humidity, underwatering, or dry indoor air. Yellowing fronds may indicate overwatering or poor drainage. If the rhizomes become shrivelled, the plant likely needs more consistent moisture. While it appreciates regular care, it is generally forgiving once humidity and watering are balanced correctly.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Davallia fejeensis is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and most common household pets. It is also generally regarded as safe around reptiles such as geckos, bearded dragons, and tortoises if lightly nibbled. While it is not known to cause poisoning, consuming large amounts of any plant material may still result in mild digestive upset, so it is best kept as a decorative feature rather than a snack.
