Appearance and growth habit

Hedera helix (English Ivy) is a classic trailing houseplant prized for its lush cascading vines and attractive foliage. This mixed selection includes rich green, fresh mint-toned, and beautifully variegated varieties, making every plant a little unique. It grows quickly and is perfect for hanging baskets, shelves, plant stands, or training up a trellis if you'd rather it climb than dangle.

Care requirements

English Ivy thrives in bright, indirect light but will also grow well in medium light. Water when the top layer of soil feels dry, and avoid leaving the roots sitting in soggy soil. It enjoys cooler indoor temperatures and appreciates moderate humidity, although it's generally forgiving. Give it an occasional trim to keep it full and bushy—otherwise it'll happily start exploring your furniture.

Troubleshooting

Yellowing leaves are usually caused by overwatering, while dry, crispy edges often mean the plant needs more consistent watering or higher humidity. Leggy growth is a sign it would like a brighter position. Regularly check for common pests such as spider mites, especially if the air in your home is particularly dry.

Pet and reptile safety

Hedera helix is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if ingested and should be kept out of reach of curious pets. It is not recommended for reptile enclosures, as the leaves contain compounds that can be harmful if eaten by reptiles. While it makes a beautiful ornamental houseplant, it is best suited to homes where pets and reptiles cannot access the foliage.
