Appearance and growth habit
Ficus pumila ‘Variegata’, commonly known as Variegated Creeping Fig, is a fast-growing climbing and trailing plant with small heart-shaped leaves marked with attractive cream and green variegation. It naturally clings to surfaces and spreads readily, making it an excellent choice for terrariums, vivariums, moss poles and trailing displays.
 
Care requirements
Give Ficus pumila Variegated bright, indirect light to maintain its attractive variegation and encourage compact growth. Keep the soil lightly moist, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings, and provide good humidity. It appreciates warmth and can grow quickly when conditions are right, so be prepared for it to get comfortable and start taking over.
 
Troubleshooting
Brown or crispy leaves usually indicate that the plant is too dry, the humidity is too low or it is receiving too much direct sun. Yellowing leaves can be caused by overwatering, while sparse or less-variegated growth may indicate insufficient light. Trim regularly to keep its growth under control and encourage a fuller appearance.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Ficus pumila is considered toxic to cats and dogs if ingested and its milky sap can cause irritation. It is therefore best kept away from pets that like to chew plants. It is also not recommended as a reptile-safe plant where chewing or ingestion may occur, so choose a confirmed reptile-safe species for animal enclosures.
