Appearance and growth habit
Hedera Helix Green Ivy is a classic, no-fuss trailing plant with rich green, lobed leaves and flexible vines that grow fast and with enthusiasm. It works beautifully as a hanging plant, shelf spiller, or climbing feature when given support. Dense and leafy when happy, it quickly turns any corner into a small indoor jungle. It’s basically the plant equivalent of “give me an inch and I’ll take the whole wall.”
 
Care requirements
Green Ivy prefers bright indirect light but is adaptable and can tolerate medium to lower light conditions. Keep the soil lightly moist with good drainage, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. It appreciates cooler to moderate indoor temperatures and benefits from regular trimming to keep growth controlled and bushy. It’s forgiving, but it does prefer consistency over neglect.
 
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves are usually a sign of overwatering or poor drainage, while dry, crispy edges can point to underwatering or dry indoor air. If the plant becomes sparse or leggy, it likely needs more light and a good prune to encourage fuller growth. Loss of vigour can also happen if it’s not being fed occasionally during the growing season. It’s hardy, but not entirely self-managing.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Hedera Helix Green Ivy is toxic to cats, dogs, and reptiles if ingested. It can cause symptoms such as drooling, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and irritation of the mouth and stomach. It is not considered safe for tortoises, bearded dragons, geckos, or other curious pets that may chew foliage. Best kept out of reach so it stays a beautiful trailing plant, not a veterinary surprise.
