Appearance and growth habit
Macodes petola, better known as the Jewel Orchid, is grown for its spectacular foliage rather than its flowers. Its velvety deep green leaves are covered in shimmering golden veins that seem to glow under the light, making it a true collector's favourite. This compact terrestrial orchid grows slowly, spreading along the surface of the potting mix to form a lush, low-growing clump that's perfect for terrariums, display cabinets, or bright indoor spaces.
 
Care requirements
This tropical beauty thrives in bright, indirect light, warm temperatures, and high humidity. Keep the growing medium lightly moist but never soggy, and plant it in a well-draining, moisture-retentive mix rich in sphagnum moss and fine bark. It isn't a climbing orchid, so there's no need for a moss pole—it's perfectly happy staying low and showing off those dazzling leaves instead.
 
Troubleshooting
Crispy leaf edges usually mean the humidity is too low, while yellowing or soft leaves often point to overwatering. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the delicate foliage and fade the beautiful leaf veining. Like most tropical houseplants, keep an eye out for spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs, especially if humidity drops. Pet and reptile safety
Macodes petola is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, although chewing the leaves may cause mild stomach upset. It is also suitable as a decorative plant for humid reptile enclosures and terrariums but should not be offered as food. Always use plants that have not been treated with pesticides or systemic insecticides before placing them in any animal habitat.
