Appearance and growth habit
Anoectochilus roxburghii, also known as the Jewel Orchid, is prized for its breathtaking foliage rather than its flowers. Its velvety deep green leaves are decorated with intricate golden to copper-coloured veins that shimmer in the light, making it a true collector's favourite. This compact terrestrial orchid grows slowly, spreading gently along the surface of the potting mix to form a neat, low-growing clump that's perfect for terrariums, display cabinets, or warm indoor spaces.
Care requirements
This tropical beauty thrives in bright, indirect light, consistently warm temperatures, and high humidity. Keep the growing medium lightly moist without allowing it to become waterlogged, and use a loose, moisture-retentive mix containing sphagnum moss and fine bark. It isn't a climbing orchid, so skip the moss pole—it's much happier showing off its stunning leaves from ground level.
Troubleshooting
Brown leaf edges usually indicate humidity that's too low, while yellowing or soft leaves are often signs of overwatering. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the delicate foliage and dull the beautiful metallic veining. Watch for common houseplant pests such as spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs, particularly in dry conditions. Give it stable care and it'll reward you with one gorgeous leaf after another.
Pet and reptile safety
Anoectochilus roxburghii is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, although chewing the foliage may cause mild stomach upset. It is also suitable as a decorative plant for humid reptile enclosures and terrariums but should not be offered as food. Always ensure any plant placed in an animal enclosure has not been treated with pesticides or systemic insecticides.
