Appearance and growth habit

Drosera spatulata, commonly known as the Spoon Leaf Sundew, is a fascinating carnivorous plant that forms a compact rosette of spoon-shaped leaves covered in sparkling, sticky tentacles. These glistening droplets aren't just for show—they help the plant catch tiny insects for nutrients. Small, delicate flowers appear on tall stems above the foliage, adding even more charm to this conversation-starting plant.

Care requirements

This easy-to-grow carnivorous plant loves bright light, consistently moist conditions, and nutrient-poor soil. Always water with rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water, and never allow the growing medium to dry out completely. It thrives in sunny windows, terrariums with excellent light, and bog-style planters. No fertiliser needed—it much prefers catching its own snacks.

Troubleshooting

If the leaves lose their sticky droplets, the plant usually needs more light, higher humidity, or better-quality water. Brown tips are often caused by mineral-rich tap water, while slow growth can result from insufficient light or unsuitable soil. Avoid fertilising or planting it in regular potting mix, and keep an eye out for the occasional spider mite, thrip, or mealybug, although pests are generally uncommon.

Pet and reptile safety

Drosera spatulata is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, although eating any plant material may cause mild stomach upset. It is also regarded as safe as a decorative plant in suitable reptile enclosures and bioactive terrariums but should not be used as a food source. Always ensure plants introduced to animal habitats are free from pesticides and systemic insecticides.
