Appearance and growth habit

Saxifraga stolonifera 'Tricolor' is a colourful variegated form of the classic Strawberry Begonia, featuring soft green leaves edged in creamy white with attractive pink highlights. The undersides of the leaves are a rich reddish-purple, adding even more interest. It produces long runners with baby plantlets, making it perfect for hanging baskets, terrariums, and bright indoor spaces. It doesn't just grow—it builds its own little family.

Care requirements

Saxifraga stolonifera 'Tricolor' thrives in bright, indirect light, which helps maintain its vibrant variegation. Keep the soil evenly moist but well-drained, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. It enjoys moderate to high humidity, cooler indoor temperatures, and protection from direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate foliage.

Troubleshooting

If the variegation starts fading, the plant likely needs brighter indirect light. Brown leaf edges usually indicate low humidity or inconsistent watering, while yellowing leaves often point to overwatering or poor drainage. Trim excess runners to keep the plant tidy, or pot up the baby plantlets for an easy (and free) way to expand your collection.

Pet and reptile safety

Saxifraga stolonifera 'Tricolor' is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a pet-friendly choice for most households. It can also be used in suitable reptile enclosures where its care requirements are met, adding colour and natural cover. While considered safe, it should be treated as decorative habitat planting rather than a food source for reptiles or other pets.
