Appearance and growth habit
Acrocarpous moss refers to mosses that grow in upright, compact cushions or tufts rather than spreading in a flat carpet. They are excellent for adding natural texture and a woodland feel to terrariums, vivariums and moss displays. Growth is generally slow, but once established, they can form attractive dense patches that make your setup look considerably more sophisticated than a pile of damp soil.
 
Care requirements
Keep acrocarpous moss consistently moist and provide moderate to bright filtered light. High humidity is usually beneficial, particularly in closed or semi-closed terrariums. Use clean, nutrient-poor materials and avoid strong fertilisers, as moss does not need much feeding. Good airflow is still important, even in humid environments, to prevent stagnant conditions and mould.
 
Troubleshooting
If the moss becomes brown, dry or brittle, it is usually struggling with insufficient moisture or humidity. Excessive direct sunlight can also cause it to dry out quickly. If you notice mould, improve airflow and reduce excess moisture while removing affected material. Healthy moss should remain soft and show fresh green growth when conditions are suitable.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Acrocarpous moss is generally considered safe as a decorative substrate or habitat plant for reptiles and amphibians, provided it has been grown and supplied without pesticides, fertilisers or other chemicals. It should not be treated as a food source, and the specific animal species should always be considered when selecting plants or natural materials for an enclosure.
