Appearance and growth habit
Utricularia longifolia is an unusual tropical carnivorous plant with long, strap-like green leaves and delicate purple flowers. Like other bladderworts, it produces tiny underground or aquatic bladder traps that catch microscopic prey. It is a fascinating choice for carnivorous plant collectors and humid terrarium-style setups.
 
Care requirements
Give Utricularia longifolia bright, indirect light and keep its growing medium consistently moist. It prefers high humidity and soft, mineral-free water such as rainwater, distilled water or suitable reverse-osmosis water. Use a nutrient-poor carnivorous plant mix and avoid ordinary fertiliser, as this little predator prefers to hunt for its own dinner.
 
Troubleshooting
Brown or dying growth can result from drying out, unsuitable water or conditions that are too harsh. Slow growth may simply mean the plant needs more light or time to settle in. Avoid tap water with high mineral content and never allow the growing medium to dry completely. If conditions are right, it can spread steadily and reward you with its unusual flowers.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Utricularia longifolia is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats. It is also considered safe for reptiles and amphibians, making it a suitable option for appropriate humid or bioactive enclosures. As with any enclosure plant, use untreated plants and avoid pesticides, fertilisers or other chemicals that could be harmful if accidentally ingested.
