Selaginella Ruby Red is a low-growing, spreading plant with delicate, fern-like foliage that develops attractive reddish to ruby tones under the right conditions. Its fine texture creates a lush carpet effect, making it an excellent choice for terrariums, vivariums and humid plant displays. Small plant, big personality.
 
Care requirements
Give Selaginella Ruby Red bright, indirect light, consistently moist soil and high humidity. It does particularly well in closed or semi-enclosed terrariums where humidity stays high. Keep the growing medium moist but not waterlogged, and avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate foliage.
 
Troubleshooting
Crispy, brown or curled foliage usually means the plant has dried out or the humidity is too low. Pale or stretched growth can indicate insufficient light, while mushy or yellowing growth may point to excessive moisture and poor airflow. Keep conditions consistently humid and moist rather than alternating between desert and swamp.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Selaginella Ruby Red is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs and is also regarded as suitable for reptile and amphibian enclosures. It is a good option for decorative use and incidental nibbling, provided the plant has not been treated with pesticides, fertilisers or other chemicals that could be harmful to animals.
