Appearance and growth habit
Begonia dregei is a charming, unusual begonia with small, glossy green leaves and delicate red veins. It develops a compact, branching growth habit and can form a lovely little shrub-like plant with age. Its petite size and interesting shape make it a great choice for plant collectors and terrarium-style displays.
 
Care requirements
Give Begonia dregei bright, indirect light and keep the soil lightly moist without leaving it soggy. It enjoys warmth, good humidity and excellent drainage. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves, and avoid letting the plant completely dry out for extended periods. Basically, keep it cosy, humid and hydrated, but don't turn its pot into a swamp.
 
Troubleshooting
Yellowing or soft leaves are usually a sign of too much water or poor drainage, while crispy edges and leaf drop can indicate dry conditions or low humidity. Leggy growth generally means the plant needs more light. Keep an eye out for common pests such as mealybug, aphids and spider mites.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Begonias are considered toxic to dogs and cats if ingested, with the greatest concern generally being the underground parts of the plant. Begonia dregei is therefore best kept away from pets that like to chew plants. It is not recommended as a reptile-safe plant for enclosures where regular chewing or ingestion may occur; choose a confirmed reptile-safe plant instead.
