Appearance and growth habit
Riccia fluitans, commonly known as Floating Crystalwort, is a bright green aquatic liverwort that forms dense, delicate cushions of branching growth. It can be left floating on the water's surface or attached to rocks, wood and other surfaces for a lush moss-like effect. A great little option for aquariums, paludariums and aquatic sections of terrariums.
Care requirements
Riccia fluitans does best with good lighting, clean water and plenty of nutrients. When grown submerged, it can be attached to hardscape or allowed to float freely. Regular trimming helps keep it compact and prevents it from taking over the tank. Give it decent water movement without blasting it across the aquarium — it likes a little flow, not a white-water adventure.
Troubleshooting
If Riccia starts turning pale, melting or growing poorly, check the lighting, water quality and available nutrients. Excessive debris can also smother the delicate growth, so gentle maintenance is helpful. If it becomes too dense, simply trim it back and remove excess pieces to keep the growth healthy and tidy.
Pet and reptile safety
Riccia fluitans is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats and is also considered safe for reptiles and aquatic animals when used appropriately. For reptile or amphibian enclosures, use untreated Riccia and avoid products that may contain pesticides, fertilisers or other chemicals that could be harmful if accidentally ingested.
