Appearance and growth habit
Tillandsia, commonly known as air plants, are unusual little plants that grow without needing soil. Their narrow, arching leaves form attractive rosettes and come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes and textures. They are perfect for displays, terrariums, mounted arrangements or anywhere you want a plant without committing to a pot.
 
Care requirements
Give Tillandsia bright, indirect light and good airflow. Water by thoroughly soaking the plant, then shake off excess water and allow it to dry completely before placing it back in its display. They enjoy humidity but do not like sitting wet for long periods, so good ventilation is essential. No soil, no fuss — although they still expect to be watered.
 
Troubleshooting
Brown or crispy leaves usually mean the plant is too dry, while soft, dark or rotting areas can indicate that it is staying wet for too long. If the leaves start looking dull or curled, give the plant a thorough soak and check its growing conditions. Avoid placing air plants in completely stagnant, enclosed spaces where moisture cannot escape.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Tillandsia air plants are generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats and are also considered safe for reptiles and amphibians. They can be a useful choice for reptile enclosures, provided they are grown without pesticides, fertilisers or other treatments that could be harmful if accidentally nibbled.
