Appearance and growth habit

Tillandsia streptophylla is a distinctive air plant with thick, curled, silvery-green leaves that give it a wonderfully windswept appearance. As it matures, the leaves can become increasingly twisted and sculptural, making it a great choice for mounted displays, plant collections and suitable terrarium setups. It stays relatively compact but certainly knows how to make an impression.

Care requirements

Give Tillandsia streptophylla bright, indirect light and plenty of fresh airflow. It prefers to dry out between waterings, so soak or thoroughly wet the plant and then allow it to dry completely before watering again. Avoid leaving water trapped in the centre of the plant, as this can lead to rot. It generally prefers slightly drier conditions than many other Tillandsias, so there is no need to keep it permanently damp.

Troubleshooting

Soft, dark or mushy leaves are usually a sign of excess moisture or poor airflow, while dry, crispy leaves can indicate that it needs more water. If the leaves remain tightly curled and the plant looks unusually dry, give it a thorough watering and allow it to drain well. A bright position with good ventilation is usually the easiest way to keep this one happy.

Pet and reptile safety

Tillandsia streptophylla is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs and is widely regarded as a pet-safe plant. It can also be used in reptile and amphibian enclosures, provided it is securely positioned and the enclosure conditions allow the plant to dry properly between waterings. As with any live plant, make sure it has not been treated with pesticides or chemicals that could be harmful to your animals.
