Appearance and growth habit
Selaginella pallescens is a delicate, low-growing plant with finely textured, fern-like foliage that forms a lush, spreading carpet. Its small scale-like leaves create a soft, mossy appearance, making it especially popular for terrariums, vivariums and other humid plant displays. It stays relatively compact and can spread nicely when given the right conditions.
 
Care requirements
Selaginella pallescens prefers bright, indirect light, consistently moist soil and high humidity. It should never be allowed to dry out completely, but good drainage is still important to prevent the roots from sitting in stagnant water. This is a humidity lover, so it is particularly well suited to enclosed or semi-enclosed terrariums and vivariums.
 
Troubleshooting
Crispy, brown or curled foliage is usually a sign that humidity is too low or the plant has dried out. Yellowing or mushy growth can indicate excessive water combined with poor airflow or drainage. If it starts looking thin or dull, check its moisture levels, humidity and light. Keep conditions consistently moist rather than swinging between drought and swamp.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Selaginella pallescens is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats. It is also considered suitable for reptile and amphibian enclosures, including situations where incidental nibbling may occur. For animal enclosures, always use plants that are free from pesticides, fertilisers and other potentially harmful chemical treatments.
