Appearance and growth habit

Macodes Petola, commonly known as the Jewel Orchid, is prized for its spectacular foliage rather than its flowers. Its velvety dark green leaves are covered in shimmering golden veins that catch the light beautifully. It has a low, creeping growth habit and stays relatively compact, making it an excellent choice for terrariums, vivariums, plant cabinets and humid indoor displays.

Care requirements

Provide low to moderate, indirect light and avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and dull their vibrant veining. Keep the growing medium consistently lightly moist but well drained, and provide high humidity with gentle airflow. Warm, stable conditions are ideal, and this Jewel Orchid is particularly well suited to humid tropical environments.

Troubleshooting

Brown or crispy leaf edges usually indicate low humidity, excessive light or inconsistent watering. Yellowing leaves or soft stems can be caused by staying too wet, so good drainage is essential. If the leaves begin losing their colour or veining looks less vibrant, check the lighting and humidity. Keep conditions consistent and avoid turning the pot into a tiny swamp.

Pet and reptile safety

Macodes Petola is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, although eating any plant can potentially cause mild digestive upset. It is also generally regarded as reptile-safe and is a popular choice for humid tropical terrariums and vivariums. When using it around reptiles, always choose plants that have been grown without pesticides, systemic insecticides or other chemical treatments.
