Appearance and growth habit
Selaginella kraussiana ‘Aurea’, commonly known as Golden Club Moss, is a low-growing, spreading plant with fine, feathery foliage in bright golden-green tones. It forms a dense, carpet-like mat that works beautifully in terrariums, shaded pots, or as a soft groundcover in humid spaces. It grows horizontally rather than vertically, slowly filling space with a delicate, mossy texture that looks far more fragile than it actually is. It’s basically your plant shelf’s softest upgrade.
Care requirements
This plant thrives in bright indirect light to light shade, especially where humidity stays high. It prefers consistently moist soil — not soggy, but never allowed to fully dry out. A rich, well-draining mix that retains some moisture is ideal. It does best in stable, humid environments such as terrariums or bathrooms, and appreciates good airflow to prevent stagnation. Think “tropical forest floor,” not “windowsill desert.”
Troubleshooting
If the plant turns brown or crispy, it is usually too dry or receiving too much direct sun. If growth becomes patchy or weak, humidity may be too low or watering inconsistent. Yellowing or mushy areas can indicate overwatering with poor airflow. It’s sensitive to extremes, but once conditions are corrected, it often bounces back surprisingly well.
Pet and reptile safety
Selaginella kraussiana ‘Aurea’ is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and most common household pets. It is also generally regarded as safe around reptiles such as geckos, bearded dragons, and tortoises if lightly nibbled. While it won’t cause poisoning, excessive ingestion is still not recommended, so it’s best used as décor or habitat greenery rather than a snack.
