Appearance and growth habit

Spotted Begonia ‘Polka Dot’ (Begonia maculata) is instantly recognisable thanks to its olive-green, wing-shaped leaves covered in bold silver spots and deep red undersides. It grows upright on bamboo-like stems and naturally forms a tall, branching structure over time. When mature, it can produce delicate clusters of small white flowers, but let’s be honest — the leaves are the real show-off here. It’s striking without trying too hard, which is probably why it’s so popular.

Care requirements

This begonia prefers bright, indirect light to keep its spots vivid and growth strong, but it should be protected from harsh direct sun. Water when the top layer of soil feels dry, ensuring good drainage as it dislikes sitting in wet soil. It thrives in warm indoor conditions with moderate humidity and appreciates consistent care. A light, airy potting mix helps keep its roots healthy and drama-free.

Troubleshooting

If leaves become crispy or edges brown, the plant may be getting too much direct sun or not enough humidity. Yellowing leaves are usually a sign of overwatering or poor drainage. If it starts leaning or looking leggy, it likely needs more light or a light prune to encourage branching. It can be a bit expressive, but it’s usually telling you exactly what it needs.

Pet and reptile safety

Spotted Begonia Polka Dot is toxic to cats, dogs, and reptiles if ingested. It contains insoluble calcium oxalates that can cause mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, and digestive discomfort. It is not considered safe for tortoises, bearded dragons, geckos, or other pets that may chew foliage. Best kept out of reach so it stays a statement plant, not a health risk.
