Appearance and growth habit
Serissa foetida variegata, often called the “Tree of a Thousand Stars,” is a compact, shrubby plant known for its small green leaves edged in creamy white and its delicate, star-shaped white flowers. It has a naturally bonsai-like growth habit, making it a popular choice for shaped containers and structured indoor displays. It grows slowly and can be trained into a neat, miniature tree form over time. It’s refined, a little fussy, but undeniably elegant when happy.
Care requirements
This plant prefers bright indirect light, and a bit of gentle morning sun can help encourage flowering and strong variegation. Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged, as it dislikes sitting in wet conditions. It thrives in moderate humidity and stable indoor temperatures, with good airflow helping to keep it healthy. A well-draining, slightly acidic soil mix will keep its roots comfortable and reduce stress.
Troubleshooting
Leaf drop is common if the plant is moved, overwatered, or exposed to sudden environmental changes. Yellowing leaves usually point to excess moisture, while dry, crispy edges can indicate underwatering or low humidity. If flowering is absent, it typically needs more light. It can be a bit particular, but once it settles, it becomes a beautiful, structured feature plant.
Pet and reptile safety
Serissa foetida variegata is considered toxic to cats, dogs, and reptiles if ingested. It may cause gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting or discomfort if chewed. It is not considered safe for tortoises, bearded dragons, geckos, or other pets that may nibble foliage. Best kept out of reach so it remains a decorative bonsai-style plant, not a health risk.
