Appearance and growth habit
Canadian Peat Moss is a light, fibrous organic material harvested from natural peat bogs, commonly used as a key ingredient in potting mixes and soil blends. It has a soft, spongy texture when moist and a pale brown appearance when dry. In plant care, it works quietly in the background—like the unsung hero of healthy root systems.
Care requirements
Best used as a soil amendment rather than a standalone medium. It helps retain moisture while improving soil structure for plants that prefer consistently damp conditions. Soak or hydrate thoroughly before use, as dry peat moss can be difficult to re-wet. It blends well with perlite, bark, or coco coir depending on plant needs.
Troubleshooting
If soil becomes too dense or waterlogged, peat moss may be retaining too much moisture on its own—mix in aerating materials like perlite or bark. If it dries out completely, it can become hydrophobic and resist rehydration, so pre-soaking is essential. Overuse in potting mixes can also lead to poor airflow around roots.
Pet and reptile safety
Canadian Peat Moss is generally non-toxic to pets and reptiles, but it is not intended for ingestion. Inhaling fine particles may cause mild respiratory irritation in sensitive animals, and ingestion can lead to digestive upset. In reptile enclosures, it should be used carefully and in appropriate species-specific setups where moisture retention is beneficial.
