Appearance and growth habit

Selaginella kraussiana, known as Green Club Moss, is a low-growing, spreading plant with finely divided, soft green foliage that forms a dense, carpet-like mat. Its delicate, mossy appearance makes it ideal for terrariums, shaded pots, and humid indoor displays where you want a lush groundcover effect. It spreads horizontally rather than upward, slowly filling space with a soft, textured green layer. It’s subtle, but very good at its job.

Care requirements

This plant prefers bright indirect light to light shade and thrives in consistently humid environments. Keep the soil evenly moist at all times, but avoid waterlogging, as it needs both moisture and airflow to stay healthy. A rich, well-draining mix that retains some moisture works best. It performs especially well in terrariums or enclosed plant setups where humidity stays stable.

Troubleshooting

If the foliage turns brown or crispy, it is usually due to low humidity or drying out between waterings. If growth becomes patchy or weak, it may need more consistent moisture or a slightly more humid environment. Mushy sections can indicate overwatering combined with poor airflow. It’s sensitive to extremes, but it often recovers well once conditions are corrected.

Pet and reptile safety

Selaginella kraussiana is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and most common household pets. It is also generally regarded as safe around reptiles such as geckos, bearded dragons, and tortoises if lightly nibbled. While it won’t cause poisoning, it’s still best not to encourage heavy chewing, so it works best as décor or habitat greenery rather than a snack option.
