Appearance and growth habit
Begonia ‘Fabulous Tom’ is a striking foliage plant with beautifully patterned leaves in shades of green, silver, pink and burgundy. It grows into a compact, bushy plant and makes an easy focal point on a shelf, desk or plant stand. This is one of those Begonias that definitely did not come to the party intending to blend into the background.
 
Care requirements
Give it bright, indirect light to maintain its colour and pattern, avoiding harsh direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves. Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. It appreciates moderate to high humidity and good airflow, particularly in warm conditions. A well-draining potting mix will help keep the roots happy.
 
Troubleshooting
Brown or crispy leaf edges can indicate low humidity, inconsistent watering or too much direct sun. Yellowing leaves are often a sign of overwatering or poor drainage, while faded colouring can occur when the plant is not getting enough bright, indirect light. Begonia Rex types can be a little particular about sudden changes, so consistency is your friend here. Give it the right conditions and try not to helicopter-parent it.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Begonia species are considered toxic if ingested by cats and dogs and should be kept away from pets that like to nibble plants. Begonia ‘Fabulous Tom’ is also not recommended for reptile or amphibian enclosures and should not be considered reptile-safe planting. Best kept as a houseplant where its fabulous foliage can be admired without becoming anyone's salad.
