Appearance and growth habit

Begonia Iron Cross is a compact, eye-catching Begonia known for its textured green leaves with a distinctive dark cross-shaped marking in the centre. It has a bushy, low-growing habit and stays relatively compact, making it a great choice for terrariums, vivariums, plant displays or as an indoor house plant. A proper little show-off without taking over the room.

Care requirements

Begonia Iron Cross prefers bright, indirect light and warm, humid conditions. Keep the growing medium lightly and consistently moist, but avoid leaving it soggy, as its roots can be prone to rot. Good airflow is important, particularly in enclosed terrariums. It enjoys humidity, but wet leaves and stagnant air are not its idea of a good time.

Troubleshooting

Yellowing or soft leaves can indicate overwatering, while crispy edges or curling leaves usually suggest the plant is too dry or the humidity is too low. Leggy growth can mean it needs brighter indirect light. Remove damaged leaves promptly and avoid keeping the plant constantly wet. With the right balance of moisture, humidity and airflow, Begonia Iron Cross is generally a rewarding and relatively easy plant to grow.

Pet and reptile safety

Begonia Iron Cross is not considered pet-safe and Begonias contain compounds that can cause irritation if eaten, particularly to cats and dogs. For reptile and amphibian enclosures, we recommend avoiding Begonia Iron Cross unless you have independently confirmed its suitability for your specific species and setup. It is best treated as an ornamental house plant rather than a universally reptile-safe terrarium plant.
