Begonia Rex ‘Firework’ is all about bold foliage, with intricately patterned leaves featuring shades of silver, purple, pink and deep green. It forms a compact, bushy growth habit and makes a fantastic statement plant without needing to take over the entire room. Expect foliage rather than flowers to do the showing off here.
 
Care requirements
Give your Begonia Rex ‘Firework’ bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant colouring, with gentle morning or filtered light being ideal. Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, but never soggy, and allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings. It enjoys moderate to high humidity and good airflow, making it well suited to a warm indoor environment. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch those spectacular leaves.
 
Troubleshooting
Brown, crispy leaf edges usually mean low humidity, inconsistent watering or too much direct sun. Yellowing leaves can indicate overwatering or poor drainage, so make sure the pot is not sitting in water. Begonia Rex can be a little dramatic about sudden changes in conditions, so keep its environment reasonably stable and resist the urge to fuss over it every five minutes. Good drainage and careful watering are the real secrets.
 
Pet and reptile safety
Begonia Rex is considered toxic if ingested by cats and dogs and should be kept out of reach of pets that like to sample the houseplants. It is also not recommended for reptile or amphibian enclosures, as Begonia species contain calcium oxalates and should not be treated as reptile-safe planting. Best admired with the eyes rather than added to your terrarium menu.
